(Black Star Riders / Thin Lizzy / Alice Cooper)
Rock veterans Ricky Warwick and Damon Johnson are pleased to announce a “Sonic Acoustic Attack Tour” in Autumn 2018. Warwick and Johnson will team up again to deliver a series of intimate acoustic and spoken word shows across the UK and Europe. With over two hours of performance, the evenings will be featuring career-spanning classics from Thin Lizzy, The Almighty, Black Star Riders, Alice Cooper, Brother Cane, alongside anecdotes and stories taken from the artists’ life on the road. Both Warwick and Johnson are members of the critically acclaimed Black Star Riders. The band’s latest album “Heavy Fire” gained worldwide success reaching: #1 in the UK Rock and Indie charts, #3 in the UK Vinyl chart, #6 UK in the National chart, #11 in the German National chart, #6 in the USA Hard Rock chart, #22 USA Independent chart and #25 in the Rock chart.

Ricky Warwick is one of the UK’s most iconic rock front-men. Starting his professional music journey in The Almighty, with whom he released 7 albums in the 90’s, Ricky went on to record several solo albums before becoming the vocalist with Thin Lizzy and now with Black Star Riders.

About the tour, Ricky says: “Two hours plus of acoustic carnage and mayhem with brother Johnson? Who’d have thought bits of wood with wires could be so sonically invigorating??? … Well you’re about to find out!!!”

American guitarist, vocalist and songwriter, Damon Johnson, began his career in the 90’s, when he co-founded Brother Cane. Johnson went on to collaborate with the likes of Stevie Nicks, Ted Nugent and Queensrÿche, before joining Alice Cooper’s band as lead guitarist. Since 2011, Damon is lead guitarist with Thin Lizzy and Black Star Riders.

When referring to the shows, Damon says: “Ricky has inspired my musical efforts in so many ways and we have become best mates. These Warwick Johnson performances always showcase our respect for each other and our love of music. And it’s a great night out!”

They head into their fourth decade by bringing out this Four CD deluxe edition, which was preceded by the release of the ‘Gracie B’ EP on 16 March 2015. Whilst this is their ninth album in 30 years it is their third album in as many years. Founded by Spike and Guy Bailey (not Guy Griffin, he joined around five years later and remains part of the core line-up today) in 1984, The Quireboys celebrated their 30th Anniversary last year with a couple of shows at The Half Moon in Putney, the venue where they first played. They also appeared at several festivals last year, as well as both unplugged and full electric tours, and found the time to record their eighth studio album ‘Black Eyed Sons!’ They have just undertaken an Unplugged & Personal UK Headline Tour in the UK. My equally blonde, but less glamorous colleague, Dennis Jarman reviewed the recent gig at Chester Live Rooms (see here). I reviewed the Manchester Academy gig on their last full band UK tour last year (see here). With […]

Black Star Riders – Acoustic Show at PMT, Manchester: 13th March 2015

These select shows are only for around 100 winners and are held inside the store, which is a reasonable sized Warehouse packed full of guitars, drum kits and all sort of musical paraphernalia. A small stage is set up at the rear of the shop with standing room in front for the select few who have been lucky enough to win tickets. With these event being held at lunchtime it’s even feasible to nip out of work in a lunch hour, I was out just over an hour but luckily I work flexible working hours. Black Star Riders were formed in 2012 by members of Thin Lizzy who wanted to record and release new material but under a different name. It’s a stellar line-up including guitarist Scott Gorham who, although not a founder member, has been in Thin Lizzy since 1974 and vocalist Ricky Warwick who was […]

Eric Michael performs as Road Warrior Eric 13, dark acoustic solo artist, guitarist of Combichrist and singer/guitarist of Sex Slaves. An acoustic gig was arranged at Darren (Daz) and Tracy Quinns’ family abode on the outskirts of Manchester. This special show came about as, from going initially to Sex Slaves gigs, Daz has become a personal friend and he knew Eric and Combichrist were coming over for Alt Fest (subsequently cancelled) and he tried to arrange a gig in Manchester, without success. Not to be thwarted he invited Eric to play a gig at his house, and like all good things it actually […]

This happened to me on Monday night, when I turned up at Edinburgh’s Liquid Room to see Rival Sons, and saw Jameson walk on stage to total silence. He travels light, just an acoustic guitar and a single Orange amp, but as soon as he opened his mouth he completely captivated a crowd who absolutely loved him. The silence changed to roars of approval that went on and on, leaving Jameson looking quite embarrassed as he tried to leave the stage. His set was taken from his EP, Pronto, which was available at the merch stand and had people queuing up to buy it and meet the man himself, including yours truly. Pronto features six tracks, recorded in November 2013 at the Studio Apartment in Santa Ana and LA, California. I’d add storyteller to the singer/songwriter tag, as each song, if not taken directly from Jameson’s life, certainly sound as if they come from experience. His voice is raw, sometimes husky sometimes almost falsetto but always free and easy, soaring and pure. I […]

Wizz was one of Flanders best known Pirate DJs in the early 80′s. He then went on to front bands Sunrise (garage rock), Final Touch (a symphonic rock band), Lipstick Traces and Sixpack (rock covers) and he also tried his hand at playing bass in a Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute band before starting the band Wizz Wizzard. The acoustic EP came about when Mark Appleton of Rocksector records asked Wizz to play an acoustic set at SOS Festival. Since then Wizz has performed many acoustic shows each year with more planned for the f uture. All the vocals are performed by Wizz with Chris Appleton, vocalist and guitarist from Absolva also playing guitars. The songs are all written by Wizz and are reworked Wizz Wizzard songs. Donnie Vie – Goodbye Enough Z’Nuff.

The band was formed in Blue Island, Illinois in 1984 and Vie was a key member until he went part time in 2002, stopping touring with the band but continuing to write and record with them. This is a live album, recorded by Lewis John and Baz Francis over three gigs in Wales and England on 2013′s Magical History Tour. It’s completely acoustic, each song stripped back to the barest bones. Vie sings, plays acoustic guitar and occasional piano, and is joined on four of the fourteen songs by Baz Francis on backing vocals. There’s no doubt that this kind of live performance is a great way for a singer/songwriter to showcase their abilities, with nothing else to distract it really is all about Vie’s performance. He has decades of experience and is certainly a good singer, and has a massive back catalogue with Enuff Z’ Nuff, much of which can be heard here. His voice is showcased best on If I Can’t Have You, the acoustic sound bringing the emotion in his voice to the fore. However, I’m not sure it works as an album. For a live album to […]

I’ve seen them a couple of times since then, make that around twenty times. Manchester International II has now been demolished and a block of flats stand in it’s place. Since my first gig The Quireboys have seen a few changes, I suppose you could liken them to the International II, they’ve been knocked down, rebuilt and are back stronger than ever! Sheffield Corporation is a reasonable sized venue, about 10 mins walk from the city centre in the student quarter, that’s if Sheffield ha s quarters! I’ve been to The Corp a few times but have only seen The Quireboys or The Dogs D’Amour there. Gigs usually start and finish early and it then becomes a rock club. The lighting and acoustics are good, bar prices are reasonable and it’s close to transport links with free on street parking nearby. I arrived at 7 O’Clock (time for a party!) to a short queue as the doors weren’t yet open, so I headed to local hostelry The Devonshire Cat just around the corner. Good food and reasonable beer […]
