Seven bands took part in the competition: Alpheidae, Within Without, The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back, Corr Mhona, Lace Weeper, Nautilus, and Vile Regression. One of last year’s finalists, Alpheidae, were the first band of the evening and they hit the ground running from the off. It was a crushing performance and their development in the space of a year has been pretty impressive. Always a focal point, Calvin’s pained vocal cements the visible turmoil of their musical story. Bassist Gavin and guitarist Jake make for a formidable pairing at the singer’s right hand side. Their bruising delivery along with Zach and Ros set a very high benchmark for the other six bands left to play. During ‘City Of Knives’, Calvin revealed the words “Run Blind” painted on his back. As the heat of the stage took its toll, the sweat-infused letters took on the appearance of a very fine black metal logo. Alpheidae closed a classy performance with a cracking reception from the crowd. Within Without I didn’t catch the whole Within Without set but thankfully got to see the majority of it. I […]

We’re back in front of the stage at Metal 2 The Masses Ireland. Tonight is the Wildcard final; Something new for 2015, where 6 bands who did not progress to the Semi Final by crowd or judge vote in their heats get a second chance at a slot in the penultimate round. These bands were selected by the organisers based on their performances during the heats and tonight is their opportunity to drink deep, once again, on the road to Bloodstock Open Air 2015. First up are blackened thrash outfit, Chemical Sacrament. As I alluded in the previous review of these guys, when they are playing full on black metal they area force that makes a strong impression. They are clearly a group of friends who are just enjoying mixing together whatever genre that takes their fancy, be it Thrash, Death or reggae (yeah, I said reggae). Over the 30 minutes, they kick the arse of the evening into gear and extract a good reaction from the crowd. With time and focus, these genre-mashers might just create something memorable. Enshrined are second on the bill and take […]

With a strong line up, it was definitely one of the must see heats of this run of shows. Unfortunately, one of the bands (Axial Symmetry) had withdrawn the night before and could not be replaced at short notice leaving us with five in heat 5. After drawing straws, the running order was confirmed with Pursuit Of Ruin garnering the cherry popper slot for the evening. The guys travelled a long distance from Londonderry to play the show on Saturday and genuinely just love gigging. Their heavy constructions are of a crushing, in your face, demanding style that certainly made a statement. On the night, Lead singer Joey who reminded me of While She Sleeps’ Loz Taylor was excellent and I look forward to seeing this band real soon. To hear more, check out the ‘Self Destruction Imminent’ EP. Second on the bill was Animator, a Wexford group who are the tightest thrash metal band I’ve seen in a long time. Following a recent support slot with Sodom, they were on fire in the heat. Whether it is the singer’s voice, the galloping bass or one of the slickest lead guitarists in the competition, […]

So far this year I have been met with very varied styles of rock and metal and performances ranging from over the top exuberance to apologetic shyness. What makes this such a special event is not only the fact that one band from our country will get the opportunity to play at Bloodstock 2015 but that all the bands are getting fantastic exposure and the chance to play alongside each other and develop and improve from the experience. Road Rash from Roscrea is selected in the bingo ball lottery to be the first band to play. They are a very tight four piece and are crisp and tight in their performance. The keyboards seem a little lost in the mix at times, but when they are rocking they carry a sweet swagger. Mid-paced crushing riffs and clean toned solos abound in their set which draws a nice response from the crowd. Snowblind are Dublin’s equivalent to a prog Motorhead. There are not enough adjectives to describe […]

Six bands went head to head on a night that was filled with excitement, aggression, technicality, camaraderie (yes, camaraderie) and damn good fun. Black Svan delivered a set of crushing rock anthems with vocalist Keith Caffrey’s enigmatic and forceful delivery filling every inch of the venue. It’s pretty clear from their stage presence that they have benefited immensely from performing on tours with Fozzy and Kerbdog. Thrashers, Saint Slaughter ploughed through a set that was hampered by a broken guitar string. Kudos to Jagger from Black Svan for being on hand to help with a replacement. The lads regained momentum and are a band that show a lot of promise. Soothsayer were a revelation and they dealt with a second string break of the evening with consummate professionalism. This was their first show in Dublin and their brand of menacing doom was lapped up by those in attendance with a proclivity for the early sounds of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Special note has to be given to their frontman Liam […]

The remaining bands, the ball crushing Victimised and the intriguing Words That Burn definitely pushed the winners hard and have to be in with a shout for this year’s wild card final. Damage Assessment and Crossfire definitely will take huge positives from their M2TM experience and can only get stronger in the years to come. Tell us about yourselves? Within Without formed in May 2014 in Dublin. While we call ourselves a ‘hard rock’ band, we are very much an amalgamation of many diverse genres with each band member bringing something different to the table. All four of us come from a […]
