The variety and quality of bands is staggering, and Metal Blade Records is prepared to help add The Great Discord to the list of one of Sweden’s finest new groups. The band’s cornerstone is with the enigmatic vocals of Fia Kempe. Her tone and delivery is immensely emotive and is augmented by a band whose sound is impossible to describe. It’s technical, heavy, and yet not so much to overwhelm those not anointed in metal. What’s important is that The Great Discord offers a truly unique twist on both metal, and what is to be expected from a female-fronted band. The uniqueness The Great Discord encapsulates is put on display today with the release of the second teaser from Duende. Part 2, ‘Sacrosanct (Deus Ex Homine)’ : – The first video teaser entitled ‘Sanguine’ which features a brief sample of new music with eerie yet perfectly entwined visuals: – Duende will be available worldwide on Metal Blade Records on June 2nd in North […]

Voice Of The Soul – ‘Catacombs’

Proof that heavy metal does indeed transcend international boundaries in a way in which many other cultural experiences have not managed, Voice Of The Soul – who, of course, take their name from a track on Death’s 1999 album ‘The Sound Of Perseverance’ – hail from a part of the

Black Whiskey – ‘Heavy Train’

Given that vocalist Simon Gordon once fronted acclaimed Brit tech deathsters Xentrix, it may come as somewhat of a surprise to many to find that this debut album from the beautifully named Black Whiskey (any band that combines my favourite colour with that of my preferred tipple – and with the proper spelling,

In the intervening years, the band have released a few split EPs, deliberately designed to tantalize their fans – among whom they have reached almost mythic status befitting Incan gods – and not one but two live albums. ‘Ego Svm Satana’ is a more than decent slice of black/death metal crossover of the style which will not be unfamiliar to those, erm, familiar with the South American interpretation of the sub-genre. Very much redolent of the nascent Scandinavian sound – and especially the likes of Bathory – but benefitting from the advances of modern technology, it is an unrelenting and unremitting assault of complete and total evil intent which summons forth all the true black metal gods and pays due cognisance and obeisance thereto. Following the demon summoning chant of the opening intro, ‘Holocausto’ is brutalizing and brief in its punky brevity, before ‘Genocidio’ unleashes a positively behemothic blitzkrieg of blastbeats which characterizes the rest of the album in its furious intensity. ‘Warfare Noise’ evokes Venom in their mid-Eighties heyday, with Wa Han Beleth’s […]

The band was formed in 2011 by guitarist Matt Hayward and vocalist Sebastian Florek. Os Andres (bass) and Kevin Liffey (drums) complete the line-up. Since they formed they have toured relentlessly and released an EP every year. Now in 2015 they are ready to release a long player. Some might say waiting four years to release an album shows expertise in procrastination. Others might say if that’s the time it takes to perfect your craft and get to the level you want to be at then go ahead and take your time. Lace Weeper clearly subscribe to the latter theory and have put together an album that proves the point. It’s rock, grunge, heavy guitars and pounding drums but also quite melodic in places. The grunge element is emphasised by the appearance of former Nirvana drummer Chad Channing on two tracks, ‘Let Sleeping Dogs Lie’ and ‘Amend’. Someone from a band of such stature appearing on your debut album can only be a good thing, although I dare say having listened […]
