Even though it will be short lived (they are calling this the ‘Final Assault’ tour), the New York based thrash metal legends have reformed for their 30 year anniversary and released Pounder. This blistering 4 track E.P and 2015 tour dates including a main stage slot at the UK’s Bloodstock Open Air Festival on the 8th of August are a very big deal for me as I have not seen them since 1988 when they supported Slayer on their South Of Heaven tour. The 2 sets I saw in Manchester and Newport gave the headliners a hard act to follow considering how partisan Slayer audiences can be. Out of the quartet, 3 of the original line up are here. Bassist Dan Lilker, vocalist/guitarist John Connelly and drummer Glenn Evans are joined by Erik Burke on lead guitar who played with the band between 2002 – 2004 and from 2011 to the present day. All 4 tracks transcend the 30 year gap between their beginnings and the present day. Dan Lilker left Anthrax so as to play more aggressive music and formed Nuclear Assault with John Connelly 30 years ago and this pairing […]

Unleashed – Dawn of the Nine

Bringing forth their 12th studio album, Sweden’s Unleashed has, with Dawn of the Nine, successfully continued an aggressive, fairly melodic saga. Their previous release, Odalheim, released in 2012, began this journey.

Let’s pretend you’re a new fan, perhaps just introduced to death metal a little while ago, and your virgin ears have never heard Unleashed. Their previous release, Odalheim, released in 2012, began this journey. Let’s pretend you’re a new fan, perhaps just introduced to death metal a little while ago, and your virgin ears have never heard Unleashed. If that’s the case, this disc will tear the seat off your pants and drop your jaw to the floor. From the pummeling, constant double-bass drum sonic pressure, to the low-pitched menacing growled vocals, to the blazing fast guitar solos woven into every song, Dawn of the Nine is a high-speed chase – an adventure in sound and prose through past Norse mythological battles. It is mid-tempo to high speed, fairly melodic and yet fairly dissonant, fairly brutal European death metal done right. Unleashed even borrows from rock and pop music’s dirty little secret to “winning listeners over”: adding subtle nods to their peers or influences (with titles like “The Bolt Thrower”, or making allusions to church burnings, or using the phrase “hammer battalions” repeatedly, and so on). As for the old-school, somewhat jaded fans who have been following since Swedish death metal became known […]

Black Star Riders – The Killer Instinct (Second Opinion)

Internationally acclaimed music legends Black Star Riders’s ten track “second album, The Killer Instinct, is released via Nuclear Blast. Produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Mastodon, Rush), The Killer Instinct is hard rock in the classic tradition.” In 2012, the band was formed, and contains three former members of Thin Lizzy: guitarist Scott Gorham, lead vocalist and guitarist Ricky Warwick, and guitarist Damon Johnson. “New bassist Robbie Crane has fitted in seamlessly as the perfect replacement for Marco Mendoza.” Rounding out the band’s lineup is drummer Jimmy DeGrasso (ex-Megadeth, Alice Cooper). Nick Raskulinecz and the band have produced an album which strives to give a little more depth to the band’s core sound. Excellently engineered, mixed and mastered, The Killer Instinct is a fairly even-tempered, loud beast, with very nice depth and sound balance. With three guitarists (two credited as “lead” and “co-lead”) in the mix, you’d expect some paint-peeling crazy stuff to happen, correct? The sound is surprisingly simplistic. There are plenty of instrumental breaks, nice solos, and wonderful harmonic overlays, but the disc doesn’t come across the speakers as a “heavy metal triple axe attack”. Instead, it mostly presents itself as a relaxed pace, middle-of-the-road hard rock album, with […]
