It’s been a hell of a competition this year as the 36 entrants were whittled down to what will be the final six. Semi final A gave us Nautilus, Vile Regression and The Devil Wants Her Swagger Back and Semi Final B left the last 7 bands busting their balls for the remaining places. PlanetMosh has been present at every show this year and the level of talent in the Irish scene has been astounding. Semi final B was no exception in the metal maelstrom that is M2TM IRE. Read on to see what went down in Fibbers at the weekend. Devolted First up is Devolted who are by far the sharpest dressed band in 2015. Frontman Rafal, was born to be on the stage. His larger than life persona really catches the attention and his between song banter is hilarious. “Ladies and Genitals, we are Devolted” quips the leopard print clad bassist. Drummer Dominik, (on a night that features many extrovert drummers) stands aloft the kit and simulates sexy time with the crowd. These guys are fun from the start, and their […]

With a strong line up, it was definitely one of the must see heats of this run of shows. Unfortunately, one of the bands (Axial Symmetry) had withdrawn the night before and could not be replaced at short notice leaving us with five in heat 5. After drawing straws, the running order was confirmed with Pursuit Of Ruin garnering the cherry popper slot for the evening. The guys travelled a long distance from Londonderry to play the show on Saturday and genuinely just love gigging. Their heavy constructions are of a crushing, in your face, demanding style that certainly made a statement. On the night, Lead singer Joey who reminded me of While She Sleeps’ Loz Taylor was excellent and I look forward to seeing this band real soon. To hear more, check out the ‘Self Destruction Imminent’ EP. Second on the bill was Animator, a Wexford group who are the tightest thrash metal band I’ve seen in a long time. Following a recent support slot with Sodom, they were on fire in the heat. Whether it is the singer’s voice, the galloping bass or one of the slickest lead guitarists in the competition, […]

Metal 2 The Masses Ireland – Heat 3 – 13/02/2015 & Interviews

Friday night’s Metal 2 The Masses Ireland heat was always going to be the curveball in this year’s showcase. It was a real mixed bag of genres that came together in Fibber Magees and what followed was an interesting selection of performances.

It was a real mixed bag of genres that came together in Fibber Magees and what followed was an interesting selection of performances. The Dark Lanes opened the evening. Kevin’s enthusiasm for the moment cost them a cable disconnection incident that resulted in a minor momentum kill but they laughed it off and kept soldiering on. This band played hard and it was clear that they enjoy being together on stage as they fed off and encouraged each other at every riff, bass line and drum fill. Lace Weeper whose hard rock stylings were lapped up by the crowd followed. At times, both bassist Os and vocalist Seb were throwing more shapes than toddler with a box of lego bricks. Seb’s powerhouse voice more than backs up his onstage manoeuvres and coupled with Matt’s riffing make Lace Weeper one to watch in 2015. Read the PlanetMosh review of their soon to be released debut album here. Lace Weeper Raum Kingdom‘s sludge driven power doffed the inspirational hat to Neurosis, Tool and Deftones. Frontman Dave Lee has a bellowing voice with more guttural rumblings […]

Six bands went head to head on a night that was filled with excitement, aggression, technicality, camaraderie (yes, camaraderie) and damn good fun. Black Svan delivered a set of crushing rock anthems with vocalist Keith Caffrey’s enigmatic and forceful delivery filling every inch of the venue. It’s pretty clear from their stage presence that they have benefited immensely from performing on tours with Fozzy and Kerbdog. Thrashers, Saint Slaughter ploughed through a set that was hampered by a broken guitar string. Kudos to Jagger from Black Svan for being on hand to help with a replacement. The lads regained momentum and are a band that show a lot of promise. Soothsayer were a revelation and they dealt with a second string break of the evening with consummate professionalism. This was their first show in Dublin and their brand of menacing doom was lapped up by those in attendance with a proclivity for the early sounds of Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Special note has to be given to their frontman Liam […]

The remaining bands, the ball crushing Victimised and the intriguing Words That Burn definitely pushed the winners hard and have to be in with a shout for this year’s wild card final. Damage Assessment and Crossfire definitely will take huge positives from their M2TM experience and can only get stronger in the years to come. PlanetMosh had a quick catch up with Within Without and Theories Divide in the aftermath. Within Without – Michael Murphy For people hearing about Within Without for the first time. Tell us about yourselves? Within Without formed in May 2014 in Dublin. While we call ourselves a ‘hard rock’ band, we are very much an amalgamation of many diverse genres with each band member bringing something different to the table. All four of us come from a […]

The British NWOBHM cult band OVERDRIVE from Grantham (not to be confused with the Swedish Obscure-Metal band) are a misunderstood gem for lovers of the genre. In 1981 the Band released the three track single “On The Run” – which is now extremely rare, followed by four studio albums since 1990. Now they have signed a deal with our sub-label Pure Rock Records and the first album of this collaboration is called “The Final Nightmare”. The five gracefully aged men are playing nine catchy, driving and moving hard rock songs, very near to the border of classic heavy metal, spiced up with several Deep Purple/Rainbow-like Hammond/Keyboard solos. The vocals are reminding sometimes a little bit of Saxon front man Biff Byford, while original guitarist Tracey W. Abbott is celebrating simple, catchy riffs that are going straight into the ear. Between faster tracks like “Glass Game” and “Wasted” or good mid-tempo songs like “Twisting My Mind” and “Lost On A Mountain”, you can also find powerful ballads like “Taken Young (Ben’s song)” […]
