This being only their 4th Full Length in all these years. Led by the formidable Lori S the band has been through quite a few bass players including Guy Pinhas of Goatsnake and The Obsessed fame amongst others with the rest of the lineup remaining fairly static. Acid King play slow heavy riffs which are dominated by Lori’s reverb driven vocals which have an angelic quality while being sinister at the same time. The album kicks into gear after the intro with “Silent Pictures”, a brooding sombre guitar line being supported by the sheer weight of the drums and floor of bass. The drum patterns are hypnotic throughout supported by a lulling bass, the songs are long and drawn out – nothing really goes anywhere but sloshes around familiar riffs and never gets boring. Acid King write quintessential stoner rock, they stick to the formula and deliver what is expected. The guitar tone is thick and fuzzed out, the bass sits comfortably below it, high frequencies just do not come into the equation. Was it worth the wait? I say yes it was and hope that we […]

Mojave Lords is the brain-child of musical mastermind David Catching and his neighbour, the equally brilliant Bingo Richey. After years of working with some of the world’s brightest rock artists, they decided to team up, strap themselves in to a homemade rocket and press the launch button. With some help from their friends; Brian “Big Hands” O’Connor, Barrett Martin, Chris Goss, Joey “The Sexy Mexi” Castillo and Danny Frankel, they made what the New York Times is calling “Dark, sexy rock & roll for a brave new race.” This is the next wave of Desert Stoner Rock. Featuring members of Eagles Of Death Metal, Queens Of The Stone Age, ScreamingTrees, Tuatara, earthlings?, Masters Of Reality, Mojave Lords was born in Joshua Tree, California at Rancho De La Luna recording studio, where Queens Of The Stone Age, Arctic Monkeys, Daniel Lanois, The Desert Sessions, Masters Of Reality, UNKLE and countless others have […]

They began as a recording project in 2011 and released their first Ep ‘Trials’ in early 2013 and since have been gigging regularly around the Irish gig circuit. This is their second ep which boasts 6 tracks clocking in at the half hour mark making it good value for money. From the very start it is obvious where these guys influences have been dragged from; it has The Obsessed, St. Vitus, Solace and Orange Goblin pouring out of the speakers. The guitar sound is perfectly placed with just the right distortion to give that stoner doom vibe. It is very reminiscent of the early obsessed sound. The songs are a good length and do not labour the point of the riff, they keep things concise so as to inflict maximum damage. There is a good mix of fast and slow sections and as a promo it showcases the band well. The only criticism to level at the band is the vocals, they are too death metal for this style and it could benefit greatly with a more coherent vocal style. The music style and vocals do not necessarily fit […]

Altar of Betelgeuze – Darkness Sustains the Silence

Finland has a history of producing a lot of top notch death and doom bands such as Hooded Menace, Reverend Bizarre, Unholy and Skepticism to name but a few. This is Altar of Betelgeuze’s debut album with only one prior EP release in 2012. This is Altar of Betelgeuze’s debut album with only one prior EP release in 2012. The band has mixed the styles of death, doom and stoner quite successfully, perhaps it interrupts the flow of the album at times but it cert ainly doesn’t detract from its overall quality. “A World without End” has a solid chugging riff with a growled vocal which compliments the pace of the track and is the band in death doom mode. “Spiral of Decay” continues in this vein although a bit more upbeat with an “Obsessed” feel about it, at the halfway mark a traditional doom metal riff kicks in with a clean vocal. At this point we are looking towards bands like Penance and Stillborn, great groove and and altogether wider appeal. “Smouldering Clouds above Orion” wades through all moods, slow, heavy, clean and melodious, before bringing the double kicks and a menacing atmosphere to finish of the song. The title track is a monstrous 17 minutes long and incorporates thrash into the middle section and […]
